There was
still money in her purse, and her next temptation
presented itself in the shape of a matinee
poster.
It was a little later when she entered
the theatre, the play had begun and the
house seemed to her to be packed. But there
were vacant seats here and there, and into
one of them she was ushered, between brilliantly
dressed women who had gone there to kill
time and eat candy and display their gaudy
attire. There were many others who were
there solely for the play and acting. It
is safe to say there was no one present
who bore quite the attitude which Mrs. Sommers
did to her surroundings. She gathered in
the whole--stage and players and people
in one wide impression, and absorbed it
and enjoyed it. She laughed at the comedy
and wept--she and the gaudy woman next to
her wept over the tragedy. And they talked
a little together over it. And the gaudy
woman wiped her eyes and sniffled on a tiny
square of filmy, perfumed lace and passed
little Mrs. Sommers her box of candy.

Il y
avait toujours de l' argent dans son portemonnaie
et sa prochaine tentation se présentait
sous la forme d' un placat pour
une matinée.
Peu de temps après elle entra au
theâtre. La présentation avait
déjà commencé et semblait
complète. Mais par ici et par là
il y avait
encore des sièges vides et sur une
de ces chaires on la fit s' assoir, parmi
des femmes habillées splendidement
qui étaient là pour tuer le
temps, manger de la sucrerie et presenter
leurs robes aux couleurs magnifiques. Il
y avait d' autres qui étaient là
pour voir le spectacles et les acteurs.
En tout sécurité on peut dire
qu' il n' y avait personne qui prêtait
tant d' attention à son entourage.
Elle rassemblait tout, la scène,
les acteurs et le publique, l' absorbait
tout et en jouissait. Elle riait de la comédie
et en pleurait, elle et la femme affublée
à sa côté pleuraient
de la tragédie. Et la femme affublée
s' essuyait les larmes des yeux et sniffait
dans un mouchoir fin carré avec des
broderies parfumées et donna à
Mrs Sommer sa boîte de praliné.
