26.4.4 Infinitifs avec pronoms interrogatifs


Comme nous l' avons déjà vu dans le chapitre phrases interrogatifs incomplètes  on supprime la préposition to quand on ajoute un infinitif dans certaines phrases qui commencent avec le pronom interrogatif why. Ce genre de constructions existe aussi avec d' autres pronoms interrogatifs.

On utilise le pronom interrogatif avec infinitif ...
... pour abréger une phrase
... avec des verbes comme to ask, to decide, to discover, to explain, to find out, to forget, to know, to show, to tell, to understand, to wonder il sert à substituer une proposition subordonnée.
... avant des verbes comme to forget, to tell, to teach et to learn on utilise la construction how + Infinitiv + to pour décrire la manière dont on a fait quelque chose.

Exemples
She couldn't decide where to go for vacation.
They explained to everyone what to do.
He explains to them when to start with the new project.
We told him which one to take.
He has forgotten how to repair a bicycle.
He has forgotten to repair my bicycle.
I learned how to drive a car.
He taught me to drive a car.
